Summary

The name of the commune comes from the church of the locality, consecrated in the 9th century to Saint John the Baptist, to which is added the common name 'Blaquière' meaning white oak in Occitan. Located within the natural area of the foothills of the Larzac plateau, this territory has been frequented since Prehistory. A dolmen and metallic furniture probably dated to the Neolithic have been discovered in a burial by a local farmer. Between forests and meadows, the territory of the commune has experienced various agricultural activities, from livestock raising to olive cultivation to wine exploitation.
