After an underground journey through the limestone of Blandas and the southern Larzac limestone plateaus, where its passage is only indicated by a dry valley, the river Vis springs up impetuously in the locality of La Foux (in Occitan: the large hole). The village of Navacelles is seven kilometres downstream. In the corridor of these spectacular gorges, an almost ordinary society lasted for centuries, with its paths and terraced crops, its herds and small industries (wood working, breeding of silkworms, etc.). Vines and vineyards occupied the south facing slopes, creating a Mediterranean type landscape. There were flour mills working on the river, connected to the plateau by mule tracks.
