LODEVE

An outstanding yet little-known heritage site, the Lodève apothecary is one of the last two pharmacies in Hérault to be preserved “in situ”. The 1½ hour guided tour provides information on the hospital’s important role over the last centuries and the relationship the institution had with its donors. The apothecary (or pharmacy) is the highlight of the tour. Restored a few years ago, it has a dispensary containing a large number of glass and porcelain jars in a remarkable state of preservation.

LA VACQUERIE-ET-SAINT-MARTIN-DE-CASTRIES

A place to live or a place to stay? Feel at home, create your own space, build your own environment and share your experiences: these are the themes addressed by the Sens Europe association at Cantercel, an experimental site dedicated to living environments. In a stunning landscape with innovative architecture that lends itself to frank and open discussions, tours are organised on the first Saturday of each month and by appointment for groups. You can also sign up for an eco-housing course and stay at the “l’Oreillette” holiday cottage, where you can explore the subtle relationship between people and their environment and find out more about eco-materials and environmentally friendly building techniques.

LODEVE

Two religious buildings formerly stood on the site of the current cathedral. The first was built in around the 5th and 6th centuries (underground crypt) and the second was built by Bishop Fulcran and consecrated to Saint Génies in 975. The current Saint-Fulcran Cathedral was built in the Languedoc Gothic style in the 12th and 14th centuries. Initially dedicated to Saint Génies, it has been associated with the name Saint-Fulcran since the 15th century. The cloister was built in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. The current cathedral has a remarkable polygonal apse. The rose window and stained-glass windows by Mauvernay, the great organ, the Saint-Fulcran Chapel and the Saint-Michel Chapel also merit attention.

LE CAYLAR

This is a veritable fortress situated between Millau and Lodève. Its sheer height – 920 metres - dominates the surrounding landscape. The “Causse” (limestone plateau) is shaped by water erosion, and comprises a series of smaller plateaux interspersed with verdant valleys. Right at the heart of these plateaux, you’ll find a few mediaeval strongholds that once belonged to the Knights Templar. And below ground there’s many a cheese cellar to be found!

ROQUEFORT-SUR-SOULZON

LAUROUX

Located at a height of 700 meters in the Escandorgue forest, this dolomitic circus shelters a magnificent underground river.

SAINT-ETIENNE-DE-GOURGAS

This is a departure point for some lovely walking routes. The area is situated in the north east of Lodève at the southern edge of the Larzac. Carved into the foothills, it acts as a natural geographical frontier. Saint-Etienne de Gourgas nestles at the feet of the 'cirque' (landscape with rock formations). The houses in this beautiful village are ancient and have been restored using traditional materials. The vineyards and gardens stretch across the length of a fertile strip of land along the Brèze valley. In the Forêt Domaniale de Paratges (state-owned Paratges Forest), various walks have been signposted starting from La Vacquerie or from Saint-Pierre-de-la-Fage.
