Visits & guided tours

Guided tours for individuals or groups: visit the Cirque de Navacelles, the Museum and many other magical locations in the Lodévois and Larzac region

SOUMONT

Not far from Lodève is the Priory of Grandmont situated on a prehistoric site overlooking spectacular landscape. Classified Historical Monument, a real jewel of roman architecture, it is the only remaining monastery of the Order of Grandmont entirely preserved from the 12th and 13th centuries.

LE CAYLAR

In a 700 m high dolomite cirque in the Terrasses du Larzac lies the natural entrance to the Grotte de Labeil, an old Roquefort cave where visitors have full access to the underground river. The sight and sound of the illuminated water is unique to behold. Follow the river to easily reach this living cave's richly coloured network of crystals.

LODEVE

The Musée de Lodève is currently undergoing extensive renovation and extension work. During this period the museum is continuing its activities outdoors, with lectures and workshops in winter and major exhibitions in the Cellier des Evêques every summer. The summer 2016 exhibition, “Alexandre Hollan, questions aux arbres d’ici” (questions to the trees), was held from 18 June to 6 November. For more than 30 years, Alexandre Hollan has been observing and painting the trees of Hérault again and again, translating his physical, spiritual and emotional experiences into paintings. He also writes about the meaning of his quest almost every day. Through the image of the tree, he questions how we look at things: “don’t look too hard if you want to see what is most important... “. Charcoal, watercolours, large-scale paintings, sketchbooks, audio recordings... there are 80 works to help us resonate with the artist’s vision.

LODEVE

An outstanding yet little-known heritage site, the Lodève apothecary is one of the last two pharmacies in Hérault to be preserved “in situ”. The 1 hour 15 minutes guided tour provides information on the hospital’s important role over the last centuries and the relationship the institution had with its donors. The apothecary (or pharmacy) is the highlight of the tour. Restored a few years ago, it has a dispensary containing a large number of glass and porcelain jars in a remarkable state of preservation.

LA VACQUERIE-ET-SAINT-MARTIN-DE-CASTRIES

A place to live or a place to stay? Feel at home, create your own space, build your own environment and share your experiences: these are the themes addressed by the Sens Europe association at Cantercel, an experimental site dedicated to living environments. In a stunning landscape with innovative architecture that lends itself to frank and open discussions, tours are organised on the first Saturday of each month and by appointment for groups. You can also sign up for an eco-housing course and stay at the “l’Oreillette” holiday cottage, where you can explore the subtle relationship between people and their environment and find out more about eco-materials and environmentally friendly building techniques.

LODEVE

Two religious buildings formerly stood on the site of the current cathedral. The first was built in around the 5th and 6th centuries (underground crypt) and the second was built by Bishop Fulcran and consecrated to Saint Génies in 975. The current Saint-Fulcran Cathedral was built in the Languedoc Gothic style in the 12th and 14th centuries. Initially dedicated to Saint Génies, it has been associated with the name Saint-Fulcran since the 15th century. The cloister was built in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. The current cathedral has a remarkable polygonal apse. The rose window and stained-glass windows by Mauvernay, the great organ, the Saint-Fulcran Chapel and the Saint-Michel Chapel also merit attention.
