In *Premières Lunes*, director Mélanie Mélot explores the experience of a girl’s first period across different cultures and generations. Through encounters with young girls and their families, the film examines taboos, traditions, and the essential role of passing down knowledge and the mother-daughter bond.
The first period is a universal milestone, but everyone experiences it in very different ways. In some cultures, they are celebrated as a true rite of passage; elsewhere, they remain shrouded in silence, embarrassment, or taboos.
In her documentary *Premières Lunes*, director Mélanie Mélot sets out to meet young girls around the world to explore this special moment and the different ways it is experienced. The film focuses in particular on the mother-daughter relationship, the passing down of traditions, cultural customs, and the way this milestone can transform how one views one’s body and oneself.
A sensitive and intimate exploration of the diversity of experiences surrounding the first menstrual period, aimed at opening up dialogue and changing perspectives on this subject, which is still often shrouded in taboos.
