Once Upon a Time, There Was a Meal
As part of the 2026 Science Festival, themed “Scholarly Flavors,” the Center for Scientific and Technical Imagination (CIST) invites you on an original exploration of the history of the meal.
Eating is essential for all living beings. But sharing a meal, inventing recipes, establishing meal times, and creating traditions or rituals is a profoundly human adventure!
Why do we eat at certain times? Where do breakfast and dessert come from? Why do meals differ so much from one country to another? How did food become a pleasure, a moment of sharing, and sometimes even a spectacle?
Through a cheerful cabinet of curiosities, stunning images, unusual objects, quizzes, and small hands-on activities, embark on a journey from the Paleolithic era to the kitchens of today. Science, tasty anecdotes, movies, cartoons, and popular culture come together for a friendly and often humorous presentation centered on one of humanity’s greatest inventions: the shared meal!
And to kick things off… the program begins with a snack!
