Lodeve, a stop on the route to Compstela
Lodeve is actually on the via Tolosana and the Way of Arles which leads brave pilgrims from Arles to Santiago; 1,588 km in roughly 62 days does not frighten them!
In Lodeve, there is the Mégisserie to welcome pilgrims, it is a lodge which houses about 20 persons, located in a former cloth factory. Pilgrims should visit the Cathedral of St Fulcran and discover the former Episcopalian palace turned into City Hall. If more time is at hand, then pilgrims should also visit the Savonnerie manufactory where the carpets that grace the official buildings of the Republic are still fabricated following 400 year old techniques. The Fleury Museum houses archeological and fine arts collections, and of course also showcases temporary exhibitions of international fame. A bit farther away is the 11th century Grandmont Priory and its megaliths, the Grotto of Labeil, the cirque du Bout du Monde...
Lodevois and Larzac is a land of inspiration and nature, it has landscapes with natural beauty and others created by man across the years, both will boggle your mind. The Cirque de Navacelles is a “Grand Site de France” belonging to the region of Causses and Cevennes, which is classified as World Heritage Site by UNESCO for its cultural landscapes of agropastoralism.
Lake Salagou is also on the verge of becoming a Grand Site, thought it is already because of its peculiar “ruffes”, the red earth that gives it a supernatural decor.
Lodeve is a sub-prefecture of Herault, it is situated at the foot of the Lodeve plateau where you can find all of the useful administrative and commercial services: hospital, general doctors and specialists, pharmacies, convenience stores and supermarkets.
It is a City of Art and History, a member of the 100 Most Beautiful Detours in France network and also a land of gastronomy. From June to September, every Tuesday from 4pm to 8pm, there is a produce market where one can find pélardons, fruits and vegetables, organic bread and other local products.
From gourmet restaurants to sandwich shops, all budgets will be able to find something to suit their needs.
